Hermès is a luxury French fashion house, founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès. Its initial specialisation lay in accessories and leather goods, given its inception as a harness and saddle manufacturer, although the brand also now produces ready-to-wear clothing. Hermès is particularly well-known for two luxury handbags, the Kelly (named for and associated with the actress Grace Kelly) and the Birkin (named for and associated with actress Jane Birkin).
The designers that have served the house over the years have included Lola Prusac, Jacques Delahaye, Catherine de Karolyi, Monsieur Levaillant, Nicole de Vesian, Eric Bergère, Claude Brouet, Tan Giudicelli, Marc Audibet, Mariot Chane, Martin Margiela, Jean Paul Gaultier and Christophe Lemaire.
Pierre Alexis Dumas has held the role of artistic director at Hermès since 1992. He is also a member of the founding family that has run the company for six generations.Véronique Nichanian, who is the current menswear designer, has also worked for Hermès since the 1990s. In 2014, Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski was appointed head of womenswear, succeeding Christophe Lemaire
